As the term "guided imagery" suggests, the session is guided by a trained therapist who has been taught how to use the technique, and is wholly interactive, with the therapist acting as a leader or guide.
Hypnosis, on the other hand is much less interactive, and is hopeful of catharsis in order to heal traumatic memories from the past.
Guided Imagery is most helpful in using the client's own personal symbolic language to "unblock" a current life situation. You may have experienced "being stuck", and guided imagery can be helpful to become "unstuck".
EMDR, as the other tool described on this website, again like clinical hypnosis accesses traumatic events from the past, however, the therapist utilizes a far more sweeping cognitive restructuring to make sense of old memories and events that are affecting the present.
